Each person on their own phone,
each in their own language.
Microsoft Translator’s multi-device conversation let people join one translated conversation from their own devices. It has been retired, according to the Microsoft Translator app update (version 26.7.1.2, June 30, 2026). If you are looking for another way to do the same thing, xy works like this.
231 languages · Others join by QR, no install or sign-up · Text and voice
How it works
- One person opens xy on iPhone, Android or a PC browser (app.xy-app.io) and shows a QR code or sends an invite link.
- Others scan it with their own phone. The chat opens in the browser. No app install and no sign-up — they just pick their language.
- Everyone types or speaks in their own language and reads the messages in their own language. The original text is shown under each translation.
What carries over
| xy | |
|---|---|
| Join from your own phone with a QR code | Yes — in the browser, no install, no sign-up |
| Each person reads in their own language | Yes — in 1:1 and group chats |
| Voice | Voice messages are turned into text and translated |
| Languages | 231 |
| Conversation history | Stays in the chat like a normal messenger |
Beyond one meeting
xy is a messenger, so you can also add friends and keep chatting later, send photos, videos and files, and export a conversation as PDF. Front desks such as hospitals, real estate offices and public counters can print a fixed QR code so visitors can start a chat on their own phone.
Cost
Installing xy and joining by QR are free. Translation uses credits, so you pay only for what you use — no subscription.
How xy translates
Text is translated with OpenAI GPT, with Google Translate taking over if it is slow. Voice is converted to text with Whisper, then translated the same way.
